To prevent or relieve pain you should stretch and strengthen the muscles of the lower leg... including the tibialis anterior (the muscle in front of your shin) and your calves. To strengthen the tibialis anterior, sit with your foot dangling and a light weight attached to your foot (the handle of a bucket or plastic grocery bag). Lift the weight with your toes and slowly lower. Don't forget to stretch!
