The first of the guests of the 23rd Universiade 2005, Izmir began arriving at the Athletes' Village from Wednesday, August 3nd.The Athletes' Village Mayor Savi zcan declared that tonight (August 3, Wednesday), they would be hosting a group of 190 guests consisting of the Heads of Delegations and the athletes.Savi zcan said that he had warm and friendly conversations with the Heads of Delegations during which they expressed their delight at having arrived at the Athletes' Village. zcan said, "Our guests settled in their rooms. Tea and coffee were served. For the first time tonight, we will serve food to 190 people. Everything is working out just fine."Today, delegations from Japan, China, South Africa, Australia, the United States of America, Norway, New Zealand, Hungary, Canada and England have arrived at the Athletes' Village, besides the Turkish delegation.
Athletes have to be students, too
As popular as sports are on university campuses, most students and fans never see the other, less-glamorous side of college athletics - the side that requires serious dedication from the athletes to be successful academically. The time commitment required of student-athletes is the biggest obstacle to their academic success, particularly for road games when more time is spent traveling.
Athletes make school their game
All UNM student athletes finished the spring semester with an overall combined GPA of 3.02. That makes it the sixth-straight semester Lobo athletes had a 3.0 grade point average or higher. Leading the way for women's teams was the golf team with a 3.79 GPA.
